The Ring Twooooo
Mar. 22nd, 2005 12:14 amKaye and I saw The Ring Two tonight. I will put my opinions under a cut because there will be spoilers, I'm sure.
The sequel was okay. Not awful, but not great either. It had lots of neat ideas in it and cool special effects, but some aspects of the plot were cheesy. And it was too long too. Contained lots of filler. Max, for instance - totally unnecessary character.
When I said that the Ring Two "cursed tape" was like a commercial for the movie, I was right, because that's exactly what it was! :D This cursed tape wasn't used in the movie at all. It WAS just a teaser for the sequel. I'm glad; I didn't want them to change the tape. The one from the first movie was cool enough.
Aidan was far less annoying in this. The actor has grown up some, and acted more like a normal kid instead of putting out a half-assed attempt to be creepy. I thought he was such an annoying little troll in the first movie, but here, I actually liked him. So good for you, troll boy. He even did well at pretending to be Samara after she had possessed him.
The scene with the deer was my favorite! The way they attacked the car, it was so cool. "We deer will now get revenge for our deer brethren who were slaughtered by whoever collected all those antlers in the Morgan basement! Probably Mr. Morgan! BANZAAAAAI!"
The writer used several neat things from Ringu 2! Such as, the whole thing with Samara trying to live again by possessing Aidan, that is like what Sadako did to Yoichi, leaving aspects of herself with him (like his ability to suddenly use her powers against others). The idea that Samara's father was actually some sort of beast from the sea was also taken from the original Japanese material. Woohoo, so glad they kept that. ^_^ They also had to keep Sadako's climb up the side of the well in there by making Samara do it, but Samara's climb was just gross because of what she did with her leg, ew. The scene where Sadako did that was much cooler. I was actually yelling at the tv: "Oh shit, she's climbing the well! CLIMB FASTER! GO GO GO!" The whole scene, including the reason for being down there in the first place, was all so much better in the Japanese movie. But I still give them credit for having the forethought to know that such an awesome scene had to be rehashed for the American sequel in some form.
Man, they set up so many possibilities with these two movies and the short film that they could make sequels for years. I could even see a tv series. Let me write it, pwease.
What was the name of Samara's real mother? Evelyn. (Nice bit of trivia for you "Miracles" fans. ~_^)
Overall, I think you have to be a fan of the first movie to really like this one. It referenced the first movie a lot in ways that only a fan could appreciate. I am not sure that I loved Ring Two, because certain aspects of the plot just fell way too short, especially parts of the ending. And there were a few issues with believability (they're just going to let a complete stranger stay in a room alone with a mental patient?). But it was... good? I'm not even sure what word to use for it. It's one of those sequels that I think only a big fan could appreciate. I could see casual viewers walking away saying it sucked.
Whatever those pills were that Rachel put in Aidan's sandwich, did you see how much she put in there? And he couldn't taste that? "Mommy, is this peanut butter extra chunky, or extra chalky?"
I can tell this is going to be one of those movies I like more and more on repeated viewings, like the first movie. I already want a copy.
In other news, I am on the verge of releasing the next episode of "Sailormoon Dark," for those of you who have been waiting. I just need to update the contest page and some profiles to reflect stuff revealed in the episode. A couple stubborn birds finally started talking to me.
