If I disappear for any length of time, it's because of my computer. It has been behaving strangely lately and I may have to take it in to the computer geeks to remove a very tenacious virus. I know there's some sort of virus on my computer because I've been seeing and hearing random ads for no good reason. I tried installing AVG to get rid of it, but it didn't work. I keep getting the blue screen of death and I'm afraid that soon, the computer won't boot up at all.

I've also been having a lot of pain in my right shoulder, something that happened to me before in 2010. I've got to get a computer desk again so I have a more ergonomic setup while I use my computer. That and maybe a back massager.

See ya when I see ya! :)

If I seem to disappear, it's because my computer is acting up. I did a system restore back to the time before it started being weird, and it seems to be okay, but after battling it for over two hours, I am drained and afraid it'll fuck up again. Bleh.

Anyway, I was unable to read my friend's page tonight because of this. I hope I can catch up tomorrow.

Wanted to see if anyone knew what was going on with this thing my computer does and how to make it stop. The other day, I downloaded some picture tubes for Paint Shop Pro. They were enclosed in an .exe file. I installed them. Turns out a few of the actual tubes were repeats of tubes I already have, so I'd like to delete them. The original tube, for instance, is "snowflake," so I named the repeat "snowflake2." But when I open the directory the tubes are in, the new ones won't show up. (I can see snowflake but not snowflake2.) When I go to open them in Paint Shop Pro (just to make sure they're really there), I can see them, but their icons have a little lock over them. I went in and made sure that my computer was configured to show hidden files, and it is. So why can't I see these files?

I'm on Windows 7, if that helps at all.

The other night, I got my first taste of how easy it can be to get a virus on these newer versions of Windows. The only time it seemed to happen on Windows 95 was when I was looking for cracks for evaluation versions of various programs (I'm a bad girl). I'm using Sammie's laptop right now and it runs Windows XP. Sunday night, I got a virus just looking for pictures!

She does have an anti-virus program on here and honestly, I think it tried to warn me before I clicked on ahead anyway, but I wasn't familiar enough with the program to recognize the warning. ^_^;; I'm not at all used to picking up viruses by just looking at pictures linked from Google. O_o I got this malware virus called Antivira Av that tries to make you think it's a legitimate anti-virus program so you'll go "buy it" (a ploy just to get you to enter your credit card info). This thing was such a bitch! It disabled EVERYTHING. I couldn't look at any websites or open a single program! I used Sammie's desktop to look up a solution, and although the advice was good, I still needed her friend Adam's help to get the computer in safe mode. He had me reset the computer back to Friday and that wiped out the virus. Phew! Dealing with that virus set me back two to three hours!

I hate malicious hackers.

In other news, Sammie also has this great program that takes the audio from a YouTube video and turns it into an MP3. I've already found two rare songs on there and made them into lovely MP3's, just for me. ^_^

...coming to you from beautiful downtown DeskintheLivingRoom! Yaaaaaaaay!

My old computer setup wasn't the least bit ergonomic. I had my monitor on the bottom shelf of a tv cart and my mouse and keyboard on the floor, and I'd lie on the floor and work/play, sometimes sitting up indian style and working/playing. It was comfortable for over a year, but recently, not so much. So, after my shoulder felt better, I went back to this setup to see if it really was the problem, and unfortunately, it was. My shoulder started to painfully tense up once more last night. Damn. :( I was hoping I could get rid of my desk and have less furniture whenever I move to my new apartment, but no such luck. I dragged the desk in here last night, and after a bad arrangement that had me peering at the tv around the monitor, finally settled on putting the desk next to the tv. It looks nice. :) Took ages to get the tv moved over a couple feet (until I remembered I have little discs you can slide under the corners of the tv stand that make it easier to push across the floor), but it's done.

Getting older is no fun in this way. You can't lounge around on the floor in weird positions without hurting something. Now my keyboard and mouse are on a sliding shelf at waist level, which doesn't hurt much at all. My index finger is still puffy and a little numb, though, but I've noticed less numbness since last night. Which of course means "yes Laurel, you're exactly right, it was your weirdo computer setup that was causing ALL your pain."

But, now my butt falls asleep if I sit in this chair too long. Note: Put "comfy desk chair" on the list of things I'd like to buy when I have lots of extra cash... *smacks own butt to wake it up*

Aren't you guys glad you know that?! My life is so exciting! I'm sure the neighbors downstairs just looooved me last night, moving furniture at 4AM... I tried to be quiet, I really did, but I butterfingered a couple things, and then all my folders slid off the arm of the couch... ^_^;;

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] off_that_bridge! Hope it's a happy one. :)

I made a very nice discovery the other day. I have two computers, both pretty old, but one older than the other. On the newer computer, I downloaded McAfee anti-virus software a couple years ago. Sometime after that, this computer started running really slowly. Like, so slow it was extremely annoying. Well, earlier this week, McAfee prompted me to Verify my subscription since I hadn't used it to download any updates for a while. I clicked Cancel, that I'd do it later. Then I went online. AOL worked better than it had in a really long time. Everything loaded very quickly. I tried an experiment, and loaded my Bravenet guestbook controls to see if they worked any better. Before, when I tried to approve guestbook entries, I had to give up after a while because I got tired of waiting for it to load. But this time, it loaded within a minute and I whipped through those gb entries in a very short time. So, I tried another experiment. I went to edit my Fanfiction.net profile, which also gave me problems in the past, and it loaded right up and I zipped right through tweaking it.

What's the conclusion we can draw here? McAfee was the problem. Having it always running in the background was slowing my computer to a crawl. Now that it's not automatically running, AOL can perform the way it's supposed to. Boo-ya! I feel like I have my computer back. ^_^

Question: When you have some jewelry that may be actual jewelry instead of just junk, and you're interested in having it appraised and selling it, where can you go for that? Do jewelry stores do this? Do they charge for the appraisal? I need advice!

Guess which computer I'm using? ^_^ That's right, the one in my bedroom. I reinstalled aol, and I'm now online, but my computer probs are far from over.

First, I installed aol 9.0. The comp froze up three times while trying to sign on. Okay, let's try 8.0 instead. Fine, that works alright. But the comp still has problems booting up. It froze up a little while ago, I rebooted, and it took me 5 tries to get it to load the desktop! I'm going to look for a solution since I pretty much have to if I don't want to use that slow muthafucka in the living room. In the meantime, I'll save for a whole brand new computer, because that would be NICE.

I'm also going to ask Nancy what she did with her old computer; she just bought a new one and she said something about needing to do something with the old one when we went out to dinner a few weeks ago.

I had McDonald's today. And you ain't got none, and you ain't got none... mmmm love the McFlurrys. Weird thing, though. I ate the Happy Meal first, then my McFlurry. It sat there for a good five to ten minutes waiting to be eaten and it didn't melt at all. What kind of mutant alien ice cream is this? (Yummy, that's what!)

And now, time for pimping! The fairly final version of my latest fanfic is ready for reading. Ready, header?

Title: Fate is an Engineer
Rating: Adult17+ (NC-17) for graphic male/male sex and bad language (including multiple uses of the F word)
Summary: After being hypnotized and finding out he was attacked by a supernatural being, Paul Callan is balancing on the edge. A twist of fate crosses his path with a fellow investigator of the weird and strange, Dean Winchester, who is looking for his missing brother, Sam. But as they will soon find out, that twist of fate was engineered for reasons they could never imagine. A Miracles/Supernatural cross-over, which slashes Dean Winchester/Paul Callan.
Timeline: This story was finished at least a month before the season finale; the small parallels between it and the finale are a coincidence. (No spoilers, just a couple of small things.) Happens after the Supernatural episode "The Benders" and before "Shadow," which moves the Miracles timeline up to 2006.
Warning: Contains spoilers for all of Miracles and Supernatural up to "The Benders."

Beta Thanks: Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kaijawest and [livejournal.com profile] meredevachon for the wonderful, thorough beta treatment they gave this story.
Author's Notes: ...are multiple and long-winded and so can be read along with the story.

Fate is an Engineer

Will be cross-posted all over hell and damnation.

A couple other new stories were also added to the Adult section of the site, which can be found linked from here: Only After Dark

Note: The computer froze up before I could post this entry. I was so freakin' annoyed with losing it and having to retype it. Then, when I went to try again, LJ asked me, "Restore from saved draft?" And I did. And the whole post came back, just like that. WOW, that's a wonderful, handy little thing there. *hugs it* But man, this computer is bugging out.

The problem with my regular computer is definitely some sort of damage to the system registry. I got the same message again, about there being an error in the system reg, then the computer refused to boot up for three or four tries. I finally got it to boot up again so I could save more pictures off it. Damn I have collected a lot of Jensen pics. I don't think reinstalling aol will help, but I'll try it anyway. (I uninstalled it today. Lost lots of nice links. :( ) I'm going to look around a bit to see if there's a way for me to fix it. I sort of want a new computer anyway, but it's not something I can just run out and buy. My tax return is already fully committed: I need 1). clothes 2). some new cookware 3). new discman with anti-skip 4). uhhh other necessities I'm currently forgetting 5). fun in Florida! 6). what's left over gets spent at A-kon

I had all this stuff planned and outlined for my "Miracles" fics and then Dean Winchester had to come along and complicate everything. I'm trying to replan everything because it's easier for me to work from notes and a timeline, but certain characters are just not cooperating, and I'm afraid other charas will be sold short because of it. I don't know why it matters to me because everyone else writes self-serving stuff that they like, and I'm so worried about people not liking what I write. I guess I need to remember that part of the point of fanfic is to satisfy some need of the fan. Just because it's crackilious doesn't mean no one else will like it. Just because it's my little soap opera doesn't mean other people won't get into it. Why have I lost so much confidence in my writing? Damned if I can explain it to myself.

As long as I brought it up... Kaye, read this. :) )

I'm currently stuck using my old computer, which is in the living room, because my regular one did some funky thing tonight and won't sign online now. I'm hoping a nice long rest will fix it, but if not, I'll try reinstalling aol and see if that does it. If not still, I'll consider buying a new hard drive/tower/whatever. I'll have to save up for it, but at least I have this one until then.

Okay computer experts, tell me what happened. That computer has been locking up A LOT over the last few months. When it does, all I can do is reboot, which is what I did this time. Except it wouldn't reboot. I finally got it to boot up somewhat, and it said something to the effect of that there was an "error in the system registry" and that it would repair it on reboot. Rebooted. System registry seemed to be repaired. But after, it just kept refusing to get online. Won't even dial now, just opens that window, sits there, then says there was an error in connecting to aol. It doesn't say it can't detect the modem or anything of that nature; it just won't even try to dial in (still on dial-up, just fyi). So, is there something I can do to fix this?

I'm just glad I was able to get the computer to reboot at all. At first, it would reach a certain point, then refuse to go any further. I was freaking out there for a couple hours wrestling with that thing, thinking I might've lost everything on it. And I had just finished the final edit of "Fate is an Engineer"! Def wasn't looking forward to having to redo that, which would take hours and hours, AGAIN. I had no backup anywhere. Eeeeee, tense moment there, until I got it to reboot.

Whatsmore, do I need to buy a whole new tower, or just a new hard drive? I don't know a lot about the hardware of a computer. I can't afford to take this in to a computer repair shop. Honestly, it's not worth it, when a new tower would only be a few hundred dollars. I've been quite sick of this one locking/freezing up so much all the time anyway. Don't see the point of having it fixed when it's not all that special anyway. It has served me well, but it might be time to retire it. I'd still appreciate any advice you guys would have.

Visited le doctor today. He said I have an excess of ear wax in my right ear which is making that ear retain water, which breeds bacteria and then infection. They squirted stuff in there to melt and drain the wax. Also gave me some ear drops. SO EXCITING. At least it got me a couple days off. (My whole job revolves around listening to people yap all day with headphones in my ears; when your ear and neck feel like they are going to explode, that job becomes incredibly irritating and uncomfortable.)

I swear, people who make computer programs just don't care about poor slobs like me. I can't afford a new computer. I can't afford to upgrade the one I have now. As of now, I am stuck with this oversized paperweight, and I want to be able to download illegal mp3s just like everybody else, goddamnit. It is my right as a law-schuffling citizen of these here free states.

I tried yet another peer-to-peer program today (Kazza? Kazaa? whatever) and again met with a program that was too goddamn powerful for my poor cowering comp. I swear I waited 40 minutes to open the program, and it still didn't seem to be completely open. My computer just thought and thought and thought while aol slowed down to an absolute crawl; if anyone IMed me, I couldn't even answer them for a full five minutes because everything was so locked up. Have you ever waited five minutes for something on the internet? It is AGONY, because you can't do anything else but wait. If you leave the room, something could happen that needs your attention, so...

Finally I could get to the Search function, and I searched for a song. It just sat there thinking really hard for about 20 minutes before it finally brought up results, which I then looked through. I clicked on one choice to download, and it took another 20 to 30 minutes for it to decide it wasn't going to highlight my choice, but instead crash my Windows. I uninstalled it right after. Another try down the drain. ::sigh::

I have at this point used Napster (stopped working when Napster had all the legal troubles), WinMX (eventually stopped working, newer versions were not compatible with Win 95), tried using something that started with an I (which was just as bad as Kazaa has turned out to be in its potential to lock up my comp for extended periods and then let me download NOTHING), and I think that was it, until now. Damnit, I have no money. I am trying as hard as I can to get a job, but I run into brick walls *everywhere* I try. I want some freakin' music. The record companies wouldn't get any money out of me anyway, because I'm not paying $20 for a CD--I'll just go to Half-Price Books and Records and get a used CD. Or I'd buy a used copy from amazon. So, just give me a simple, crappy little program that will work on my simple, crappy little machine. I don't need lots of flashy graphics and junk. I don't need tons of extras that I will simply never use. I just want SONGS.

I got my scanner card properly installed!! YAAAAAAAAAY!!! I took the cover off and took it out, then tried putting it in again, but nothing seemed different. So, I removed the video capture card so I could see what I was doing better. That really helped! I got on my knees, put as many fingers as I could get along the edge of the card, and leaned all my weight down on it. It felt like it went into the slot more, and I heard this quiet "fft" sound. But it was very subtle, so I wasn't sure if I got it in or not. I hooked the computer all back up and gave it a try. Scanner Test Successful!!! ::happy dance!!!::

Oh yeah, I also put the video cap card back in and it still works fine. That card just slides right in; a baby could put it in. The scanner card could take some lessons from that one.

Many of the college students on my friends list have been skipping mondo classes this semester. I think back to my college years and I really don't know how you guys are going to catch up after all the classes you've skipped. XD I had to drop many a class because I skipped too much. College is not like high school, nope. ^_^

I had another bad "The Ring" nightmare last night. It was freaking weird, because it kept waking me up, and then when I fell back asleep, the dream would CONTINUE. So I couldn't escape it for awhile. I was sitting at this table with someone, don't know who, and the "camera" (my dream field of vision) panned back to show me that a Samara victim was sitting at the table with the whole package--eyes turned up, mouth screaming, and disgusting, discolored "I've been in the water for five days" skin. That woke me up. I fell back asleep within a minute, and the dream continued from where it had left off, with the "camera" panning back and showing me *another* dead person at the table. Woke up again. Repeat! Finally, after the third time, it stopped. What IS it about this movie and the Japanese original that has me spooked so damn bad? I've been watching horror movies since I was 11. I've seen all kinds of horror violence and disgusting make-up effects. No horror movie ever gave me nightmares like this before. Why does this one scare me so much? Is it just a perfect combination of scary elements, or am I becoming a wuss in my old age?

Still haven't heard from America's Team Mortgage on that job. It'd just be nice to know.

Dad and I went grocery shopping today. There's so much food in the house that I don't know what to eat! And I'm not even hungry, but I want to eat everything just because it all looks so good. ::Yummy face:: ;-D

My scanner isn't working. :( I can't remember if I yapped about this before, but in order to install the video card (which I am going to marry when I grow up), I had to move the scanner card. It hasn't worked since. The computer thinks there's no card there. I tried to change the port, but the comp still thinks there's no card there, so it must not be properly installed. This is the card that had to be installed by Nancy's ex husband because I couldn't get it in, no matter how hard I tried. Apparently, I still can't get it in. I've got to try again; what else can I do? I NEED my scanner.
