Weekly Supersquee
Apr. 6th, 2006 10:18 pmBabbling about this week's "Supernatural," complete with spoilers.
In ways, I really liked this episode, and in others, it seemed like there was something missing. I can't put my finger on it. I'll just put my finger on Dean instead. ::holds it there:: ^___^
Anyway, stuff I liked:
- Jensen is really good at the "hurt little boy inside" look. Wuff.
- The old lady who could turn her head like an owl. She was nicely creepy. Then it was hilarious when the Winchesters went after her, thinking she was the strega (I think that's how you spell that), and she wakes up and scares the hell out of Dean. XD "I was sleeping with my peepers open." Heh, peepers.
- I always like it when Sam gets a peek into how much Dean loves his wittle baby brudder. God it's so sweet.
- The general angst of John putting Dean in charge, then ragging on him when the strega attacked Sam. John hugging Sam and being so worried over him was really sweet, but at the same time, IT MADE ME HATE HIM for being so hard on poor Dean. I don't hate the character all the time, but he definitely made some mistakes, and put way too much pressure on his boys. Then again, we're talking about a guy who reacted to his wife's death by taking his very young sons on the road to hunt dangerous supernatural creatures. John is NOT PERFECT. XD Sometimes I think he's a really complex guy who definitely loves his sons, other times I want to smack him around and lecture him about being a lousy parent. Dean was supposed to be about ten here, and John left him alone to be responsible for his brother at least overnight? Too much responsibility. Dean even used the stove. I'm trying to remember back to if I was allowed to use the stove at ten. I really can't remember. Maybe for soup and ravioli. Easy things. I'm really not sure. Anyway, I do like the John character; Dean and Sam obviously love him. I don't want to hate the guy. He made Dean the character that he is.
ALTHOUGH, sending Dean after the strega years later, that was sort of like rubbing his face in it, wasn't it? "Look! It's the monster you let attack your brother! All your fault! Get it this time!" Of course, that's how DEAN saw it; maybe Dad didn't mean it that way. Maybe he knows his son so well, he knew that Dean needed to get the thing once and for all to feel better about his "failure."
- I liked the kid who played Michael. He should have played young Dean, with all the attitude he had. Though the little actor they got to play young Dean actually looks more like Jensen did when he was around that age. (There are pictures online, easy to find.) So it worked.
- The fact that when Dean went out to blow off some steam, he played video games. Nice touch of normalcy! Few kids don't go through the video game phase (and many adults never grow out of it, woooo!).
- The scene where Dean made them "dinner." Typical kid, Spaghettios. :D Then Sam wants Lucky Charms instead. Why did Dean throw the Spaghettios out? Eat 'em, silly kid. I think the writers wanted to show that Dean would go hungry if it meant his brother got fed. But at least Dean got the prize out of the cereal box, YEEEAH that's the best part.
- This whole ep does lend itself to fics about the past. I still want to kick John in the shins, but he did raise two boys who love each other very much, so he can't be so bad.
- I liked that the thing attacked adult Sam. It was sort of like it had the ability to attack any kid it had tried to attack before, when it didn't get the job finished, or whatever.
- That sad, sad piano music. That music is now the Dean has a Flashback of Failure music.
- Dean's last line, about how he wishes Sam could have had an innocent childhood, like other children. He doesn't wish that for himself, just Sam. SO SWEET.
- Was that "Thundercats" Sam was watching on tv? XD
Things I didn't like:
- Can't really think of anything. I guess that it was kinda typical. No real surprises.
- Why did Sam have no memory of that incident? Wow, he was a heavy sleeper when he was a kid. The strega even moved him on the bed and he didn't wake up. Is it just me, or was little Sam a bit out of it? The kid actually seemed to be drugged or something.
After it was over, I was left wondering why I felt so much anger toward John for putting so much responsibility on Dean when my dad did the same thing to my sister when we were teenagers, and I think she's a big whiner for resenting him for it? Then I remembered that what my dad did was go, "You have to cook dinner and look after your little sister," to a 16 year old. John Winchester went, "Look after your brother and shoot any blood-thirsty monsters that come in here while you stay ALL ALONE for a couple days," to a 10-11 year old. They're a little different. XD
Arrrrgh. I really should go to the doctor. I'm starting to think that maybe the reason why there's all this pressure in my neck is because I may have swollen glands? I don't know! I'm just tired of feeling this way. But I didn't get an appt made today for various reasons, and if I make one tomorrow, I know my whole day will be blown by going to the appointment. I have things I have to do! I don't have time for this. Laundry has to get done tomorrow, I have no choice there. Some of my work pants are dirty. I slept a lot of today because I needed it. I feel like I got virtually nothing done today. :P WHERE'S MY SKATEBOARD? ahhhhhhhhh... (too much "Conan" lately)
Oh, congrats to
bamboleo for being such a naughty blogger that you got noticed by Tom Green! I could only hope to be as scary a fan as you are. ;)
