One Missed Call

A little background: One Missed Call is a Japanese horror movie. I adore Asian horror. I got the movie to play in the other DVD player, but it refuses to show subtitles despite me playing with the controls endlessly, so I had to watch it in dubbed English. Shudder. The concept had potential, but they pulled it off stupidly. Once they revealed who the evil killer ghost was, half the movie made no sense. Still, I love the Japanese and their curses. Here's the basic premise of the curse in One Missed Call: A person dies. Then, the murderer (who is a ghost or something of that sort, something that is able to carry out curses) goes through the address book on the person's cell phone and kills those people off one by one. The people always receive a phone call before they die basically announcing what day and time the killer will get them, complete with a sound bite from their death. Hey, it had potential. I can see how if a person was involved in something like that, they'd be scared shitless. But they carried it out way too convoluted... and just plain stupid in places.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

I did like a few things. I liked the scene where the one girl had been marked for death by the curse, and all her friends at school were hounding her to take their names out of her cell phone, hehe! So true to life. I enjoyed the scene in the abandoned hospital where the mom's ghost was scaring Yumi, though after they revealed who the evil killer was, why was she doing that? Made no sense. She wasn't evil. (Though I understand why she grabbed Yumi's legs and dragged her into the one room; she wanted her body to be found.) I liked the aspects of the ending that reminded me of one of my very first slasher movies that I snuck-watched on cable, The Initiation (my mom would not have let me watch it if she'd known I was watching it). My favorite thing, though, was the fact that Mimiko put candy in the mouths of the people she killed because she used to give her little sister candy when she hurt her to try to smooth things over. It was like, "Oh, so sorry I murdered you, here's some candy to make it all better." I just really liked that. I'm stealing that, but only for a fanfic idea, and I'll credit the dumb movie.

The ending kinda sucked, but I believe they were trying to set things up for a sequel. Yumi didn't deserve that. But American horror movies often end that way too, I guess. Mimiko made a good villain, though. The little actress was fairly good. The actor who played the main guy impressed me also. Oh, and I was highly amused with how much Yumi fell down and screamed while scooting along the floor. There were times when she fell down when there was simply no reason to fall down! GET UP AND RUN, STUPID. Still, I'm not that sad that I couldn't copy the whole movie.

The immigration protests did not affect my commute to or from work Sunday, yay. :) The protest happened while I was at work and was over by the time I got off. The police estimate there were 350,000-500,000 protestors. HOLY SHIT.

There's a fact I'm kind of lost on when it comes to "24," simply because it happened so fast. Is Tony dead?
