Kaleido Star
Aug. 6th, 2007 01:28 amJust wondering if anyone else has given the anime "Kaleido Star" a try? I Netflixed it because the box art looked really pretty, and I'm watching the first five episodes this week. At this point, the animation is absolutely gorgeous, but the story is irritating. Some of the circus outfits are just plain ugly, while others are too ridiculous for words. I can tell that they made this series for children, so I understand why we get the ridiculously huge puffball costumes. Still, pfft. Anyway, I could deal with the costumes if there weren't so many assholes in this series.
It's funny, because we could try as hard as we could and still not get all the cultural differences covered if we made a series that was supposed to be set in Japan. And the same is true when the Japanese set a series of theirs in America. ^_^ I am really amused by all the stuff they're getting wrong. "Kaleido Star" takes place in San Francisco. Yet everyone speaks Japanese. XD Yeah I know, I understand why, but it's still funny. Next thing, and this is why I can't stand the series, everyone's such an effing jerk to Sora. If you want her to do the job right, TRAIN HER. Don't give her a task to do and expect her to figure it out on her own, then yell at her when she doesn't do it right. I'm sure they train their workers in Japan too, but for some reason, everything has to be a "learn by having your superiors treat you like dirt" thing for Sora in this Japanese series. It's not the kind of conflict that I like in a story. And every time Layla comes on the screen, I start thinking, "STFU bitch," because she's so damn mean. Watching bitter, jealous people act like idiots is not my thing. Anyway, the way that people just allow Layla to act like that is not a realistic thing for a series that's supposed to be set in America. Someone would have said, "Hey, just because you're the big star doesn't mean you should act like a jerk. Cut her some slack, she's new," by now. Sheesh.
Unless someone can tell me that the story gets better, I'm not going to Netflix any more of this.
