Supernatural "Folsom Prison Blues"
Apr. 27th, 2007 02:17 amI didn't think I was going to like this episode because it did seem like the dumbest thing Sam and Dean have ever done, as Sam said on the preview. But was I ever wrong. **SPOILERS** below the cut.
My reaction to the Supernatural episode "Folsom Prison Blues":
Now THIS is why I started watching SPN regularly. I had forgotten with all the mediocre, gotta-watch-em-twice-to-really-like-em episodes this season. THIS is the Dean I fell in love with, the always charmingly snarky Dean. So much awesome dialogue! I LOVED this ep.
Some of Dean's best dialogue from the episode:
Dean is getting his mug shot taken and he goes, "Who looks better, me or Nick Nolte?" and the picture taker replies, "Shut uuuuup." XD Whoever did the photographer's voice added just the right amount of annoyance; it was a priceless SPN moment.
Henricksen asks Dean if he thinks he's being cute and Dean replies, "I think I'm adorable." Oh YES, baby, you are. Great response, too.
One of the best Dean lines ever: They've just gotten into the prison and Sam seems nervous about being there, so Dean tells him, "Don't worry, Sam. I promise I won't trade you for smokes." BAHAHAHAHAHA! Cute little nod to the Wincesters, and at the same time, just a funny joke between brothers. It would be natural that the other inmates might think Sam was Dean's bitch because Dean was always defending and protecting him while they were in there. I love how the joke plays on this very real fear of Sam's, that some big guy might take a liking to Sam and try to "trade" Dean for him.
Sam makes the point that the people they are trying to protect here aren't exactly innocent, and Dean says, "What are you, from Texas all of the sudden?" HA, cute little joke they slipped in there, with a double meaning. I like how Dean could make connections with the prisoners, that he thought of them as people instead of lowlifes. I'm all for giving people a chance even when they seem "bad." I'm not sure I could do it for criminals, though; it would really depend on what they did. But I like that Dean is so laid back with people. He seems like the type of guy who could make friends with almost anyone because he's so charming and accepting.
When the episode started, I agreed with Sam, that this was the stupidest thing they've ever done. These two deliberately getting themselves thrown into jail certainly doesn't seem smart. But once I found out that they had a friend on the inside to help them escape, it didn't seem quite as stupid. Still pretty crazy and extremely risky, but not as stupid.
I loved how Dean came up with the corny nickname for the really big guy: Tiny! Also loved how every time he started a fight, at first, it seemed like Dean was just being a loudmouth, but every fight had a purpose. It was all about finding these ghosts. And Deacon helped him do that by making sure he got thrown in Solitary and went to the Infirmary, both places where the ghosts had been seen. I LOVE storytelling like that!! Obviously, the writer had the whole story written in their head before they started, so they were able to expertly craft the events to serve the overall ending and draw everything into the conclusion. I love stories where you have that moment after the major surprises are revealed where you go, "OHHHHHHH! So THAT'S why..." I mean, I actually got tense during this episode, hoping that Henricksen wouldn't catch them after their escape, even though I knew in the back of my mind that they wouldn't get captured. I haven't gotten tense like that during an SPN ep for ages.
Tiny, noooooo! I was upset when Tiny died. :( He seemed so nice. Dean's line, "Poor, giant Tiny," was touching, because he felt so bad for the guy, but also hilarious, because of the play on words.
Mara! Now THIS is the kind of lady I would be happy to see Dean or Sam hook up with. Competent actress; attractive; and self-assured, natural delivery of her lines. Half the reason I didn't like "Heart" much was because the woman who played Madison was a mediocre actress. I just didn't believe she was that attracted to Sam for anything beyond sex. (Of course, parading her underwear in front of his face and running around the apartment in only a sheet sort of added to that idea.) Yet the writer seemed to want me to believe she felt more for him. Maybe a more competent actress would have been able to make me believe it. I think the woman who played Mara might've been able to do that. She was very good.
It's funny how Sam (Jared?) talks with his hands even when they're in his pockets. I always think that looks cute, when someone has their hands in their pockets but they're still gesturing like crazy.
Ah, I was very surprised that Deacon was the prison guard. They got me! I didn't read any spoilers for this ep, so that totally surprised me. Very nice twist! Hmmm. Deacon's sort of cute, in an older guy kind of way. I'm getting into the idea of Dean/Deacon fic. It's rare that I get into pairings that are that far apart in age, but I would read some fic like that. Just the way Deacon pushed up Dean's chin with the nightstick and Dean showed him full submission, rrreow. Did something for me. I knew something was up when Dean did that; he was being completely different to everyone else and then suddenly, he rolls over and shows his belly to this one prison guard? Something was up there. Anyway, the guy who played Deacon was very familiar. I'll have to look him up.
Another great line from Dean, when he gets the information from Mara about the nurse who died: "I am velvety smooth." Again, YES, baby, you are. :D
Nice line from Deacon to Dean and Sam: "Your daddy raised you right." Awwwww. That sounds very Southern, still calling John their "daddy" when they're all adults. Deacon being Southern makes him even more attractive to me. I'm going to pretend he is. ^____^ Unless they said somewhere in the ep that he wasn't. I may ignore it if they did. ^_________^ That's just one of my fetishes, Southern men in general.
Mara! I love you for lying about the name of the cemetery! You rock! I wonder why Henricksen is so desperate to catch Sam and Dean. It seemed way too personal to him that they escaped. Oops, I just realized that I haven't called him Agent Asshole once during this recap. ;) He seemed a little more in control of his emotions in this ep. But he's still an asshole.
The song they played at the end was by Alice in Chains, for those who didn't recognize it. I think it's actually called "Rooster." Interesting choice. Clearly alternative, clearly not classic rock (how old is that song, ten years tops?), clearly not Dean's usual type of music. I didn't really find it appropriate for the show, but they've used a few songs like that in the past. Kinda seemed like a moment where they used a song simply because they could get it. Maybe Sam likes alternative music? I can see that.
Next week's ep - AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! I've read a few spoilers for it, and it sounds like it's going to be one amazing Dean-centered episode. I hope he fucking bawls when he sees his mom alive. They just don't have Dean show enough appropriate emotion at times when he clearly should. I understand that Dean closely guards his emotions, but even the most closed up people hug their brother and have a breakdown when they see their dead mother after 23-24 years. :P We'll see how they handle it. Either way, I am really looking forward to next week's ep. I hope it will be just as good as it seems it will be.
I've got lots of news to babble about, but I'll save that for tomorrow. Typing this post is pretty much it for tonight. One thing is that I got a jury summons, the first real one for me ever (ones from the past were always standby juror), and my stupid mind is running through all the worst case scenarios and making me worry about things that may not happen. I'm trying to get my mind off of it, but worrying about dumb things is just something my mind does naturally. *sigh*
