Cloverfield and stuff
May. 14th, 2008 12:16 am"Cloverfield" is the most exciting damn movie. Hud as the narrator was really funny. It really pisses me off that the movie was sort of spoiled for me by idiot film reviewers long before I got to see it. If you somehow missed what it's about, something really intense is happening in Manhattan, and it's a big secret (from the audience) exactly what's going on. You only get glimpses of it for a while. I don't know why any film reviewer would be such an asshole that they'd just outright spoil what's going on, but more than one did, so I wasn't fully surprised by each reveal. The only good thing is that they oversimplified it. What is causing the disturbance is a bit more complex than what the reviewers said it was, which I'm very glad for. What the reviewers kept saying was that the movie is about Manhattan "being attacked by a giant lizard," which wasn't completely true. In fact, I wouldn't even call it a lizard. It's more like some kind of alien monster with lots of little baby monsters that come with it. Either way, the special effects are amazing, so much better than just another giant lizard. The things in the subway tunnel make the funniest damn noises, lol. (I think they should have had them make different noises; I don't think they were supposed to be funny monsters.) And the best part is what you don't see, the fact that you're only given glimpses of some of the things that happen, so you're free to let your imagination run wild. You see just enough to excite your mind, but not so much that the atmosphere of the film is spoiled. They don't even explain where the monsters came from, although you can make stuff up based on what happens in the movie. I'm still wondering where the name "Cloverfield" comes from from the perspective of the movie.
I do like movies shot from the perspective of the amateur handheld camera; it's a very inventive way to do it. This had a much better story than Blair Witch, too.
I would really like to talk about the latest "Supernatural" episodes but I just haven't had time to type it. Hopefully, I can do it tomorrow night before the season finale on Thursday. I love the show, but there's a HUGE flaw in the logic of what's going on right now and I'd like to rant about it just to get it out of my system. I'm sure it'll all still be good what with the great interaction between Sam and Dean and everything.
