3 Moments in Sailor Moon
Jun. 17th, 2008 01:09 amAfter rewatching a great deal of "Sailor Moon" (animated series), I feel like talking about the three moments in the series that never, ever fail to make me bawl like a little baby. I'm talking tears running down my face, must blow my nose when it's over.
Hey, there are4 probably some people on my fiends list who haven't seen this show yet, and I wouldn't want to spoil them unless they want to be spoiled.
Moment #1: The death of the Inner Senshi in episode 45.
Especially Jupiter and Mars. There's just something about Jupiter dying first, totally unexpected by Sailor Moon, and SM's reaction that gets to me. Then, Mars getting beaten around to the point that the DD Girl thinks she's dead, and when the villain goes to kill SM, Mars reveals that she's still got some life left in her by grabbing one of her tentacle-thingies. Then one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard: "Fire... SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUL!!!!!" FWOOSH! Barbecued DD Girl! The animation is really cool and the voice acting top notch. Where the heck do they get the motivation to put so much emotion into their voices, that it sounds so real, like they're really in the moment? It's just amazing, and it touches my heart.
After that, we get SM's reaction, all of her friends are dead, and their ghosts visit her to spur her on to continue the fight alone, to save the world. They give her the strength to get up and run headlong into battle. I bawl again.
Moment #2: The end of the battle in SM S.
Saturn tells Sailor Moon that she can't stop Pharoah 90 from destroying the world unless she can achieve two levels of transformation and become Super Sailor Moon again. Saturn says that because SM cannot save the world, she will have to by destroying Pharoah 90, which will also kill her (Saturn). Sailor Moon doesn't want Chibiusa's best friend to die; she wants to save the world without sacrificing anybody, especially people who are special to her and the people she loves. So she starts trying to become Super Sailor Moon by crying out the magic words that before transformed her into SSM.
"Crisis, Make-up!"
Doesn't work.
"Crisis, Make-up!!"
Still, nothing happens.
"Crisis, Make-up! Crisis, Make-up!" Sailor Moon breaks down, beating her fist against the ground and crying. "Why?!"
The other senshi are so touched by her determination to save Saturn that they all lend her their power. Sailor Moon does this shrill breathing-while-crying thing that totally rips my heart out. Then... she tries one more time.
Soft, broken little, "Crisis...." and "MAKE-UUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!" And she just wants it SO BAD. Of course, she transforms into Super Sailor Moon, and saves not only the world, but Sailor Saturn/Hotaru too.
I get choked up when Uranus asks her if she's satisfied with how things turned out and breaks down. When SM starts crying, "Crisis, Make-up!" I am fighting back tears. When she starts crying and beating her fist on the ground, that's when I start bawling. The emotion is so damn strong. Again, what vocal performances!
This scene is so strong to me that even the Cloverway dub performances made me bawl. They actually did a decent job with it.
Moment #3: When the Inner Senshi die at the end of Sailor Stars.
Galaxia attempts to take the Star Seeds of Sailor Moon and the Starlights. Her kickass battle music starts up, and she shoots those golden orbs at them that will extract their Star Seeds. Oh noes! The music comes to a head, and suddenly, we see four shadows of four senshi who are struck by the orbs. Although the orbs didn't actually cut through them, it looks like they do, even making this wonderful thumping sound that sounds really painful when they hit. (Like somebody whacking a side of beef with a baseball bat.) The four senshi cry out in pain when they are struck. Sailor Moon and the Starlights are shown gasping in surprise. It's the Inner Senshi. They jumped in the way to save the others.
Their Star Seeds come out, and the Inner Senshi fall. The Starlights can't believe that they did that for them. Each one gives a short good-bye speech, telling the Starlights that they did it to protect people who are important to them and asking them to fight on with Sailor Moon, to protect her and the world. I've already started crying at the emotion of when they are struck by Galaxia's orbs. But wow, the Starlights were so brusque with them and actually mean to the Inners at times, and they still jumped in the way to save them because they saw the good in them. There's something about that that is very powerful to me. That in itself could keep me crying. But then, Sailor Moon goes to Mars and holds her, begging her not to die. Mars has her good-bye speech and fades away. My favorite thing is that Mars has faded into little colored orbs and is floating away, and Sailor Moon tries to grab one of the orbs to keep Mars from leaving her, and the orb dissolves in her hand. BAM, right into my heart!
Then they play the HOLY SHIT SOMETHING INCREDIBLY DRAMATIC HAS JUST HAPPENED music, and SM screams, "NOOOOOOOOO!!" and then angrily and emotionally demands, "Return them to me! Rei-chan, Minako-chan, Mako-chan, Ami-chan... return them to me!!!" while charging Galaxia. LOVE THAT. More bawling.
On a slightly different subject, the woman who does the Japanese voice of Luna is awesome. I'd have to look up her name again. She puts so much personality into that cat it's just super impressive. I recently looked up her voice acting credits on IMDB and goggled at the fact that she did a voice on the original "Space Battleship Yamato," the most awesome dinosaur anime series ever. That in itself makes her a god.
Dreamed last night that I was going to move in with some guy who was just a friend of mine, but I rethunk it when I saw that his bedroom had no ceiling. In fact, it wasn't a real room, just a chainlink fenced-in area with canvas material thrown over the fence. I'm like, um, what do you do when it rains? I mean, his bed was just completely exposed to the elements. He replied that he loved nature so much that he didn't mind a little rain, and would just throw another tarp over the bed to protect it from the water. Um, yeah, I like nature too, but not coming down on my ceiling-less bedroom. Odd dream.
