Christmas cards
Dec. 21st, 2008 11:21 pmThanks to all of you who have sent Christmas cards! I'm sorry I won't be sending one back. To be honest, I can't afford the stamps right now. But it's very nice that you thought of me. :)
I wrote this in reply to a post in
sailormoon_yuri that was primarily about the Chibiusa/Hotaru 'ship (the girls as adults; don't start freaking out on me now) and I thought it was kinda interesting when I read it back, so I'm posting it here. :)
I got into SM in 1995 with the DiC dub. There really weren't any pairings that caught my eye back then, except Naru/Nephlite. Then I got on the internet in 1997 and learned so many things about the show that I never would have known without all the great websites that were available back then. Like the fact that three whole seasons existed that hadn't yet been dubbed, with all these great new characters. I wanted to see them!! I bought S, SuperS, and Stars through VKLL. Haruka/Michiru was such a great pairing and I really loved them. At this point, I mostly just went for canon pairings. I still love Chibi-usa/Elios (the real lovin' happens in fanfic, when they're older, though). The sweet little puppy love relationship they had in SuperS was soooo endearing.
I think the way people react to Chibi-usa often hinged on how old they were when they first saw her. When I first saw the dub, I was 22. I could only see Chibi-usa as a young child in a very bad situation who had been separated from her family. Very devastating. I more saw it from the perspective of Ikuko - why can't my teenage daughter grow up and understand that Chibi-usa is only, what, five? It was like many of the fans expected Chibi-usa to react to things like she was an adult. On the other hand, many of the fans I knew online first saw Chibi-usa when they themselves were Usagi's age. They saw it from the perspective of Usagi, who had some strange brat tearing apart her room. Many of them could relate to how that felt, being that they had younger siblings. I do not. I am the baby of my family. So, I don't hate Chibi-usa -- I totally sympathize with her, and she remains my favorite character.
To this day, I still laugh gleefully at the scene where Usagi comes home and finds her room torn apart. She freaks out, blames Shingo, and sees a little pink-haired kid peeking around him. The more Chibi-usa makes Usagi's life hard, the more I snicker with glee. I can't even really explain why it's so funny to me; I just find the conflict hilarious. I guess it's because Usagi acts like such a baby, it's good to see her get a little bit of it thrown back at her. I mean, the girl threw a temper tantrum, actually pounding her hands and feet on the floor, because Chibi-usa and Shingo ate all the pie. (Another scene that makes me laugh a drink out my nose if I'm not careful.) Maybe it's because I AM the baby of my family that I feel this way about it. I don't necessarily want Usagi to change, because her crybaby ways are a part of who she is (and extremely funny at times), but at the same time, I can't agree with fans who think it's okay for Usagi to be immature and get jealous over Mamoru spending time with a child, but despise Chibi-usa for acting like the kid that she is.
I never even considered Chibi-usa/Hotaru until I saw the main website dedicated to their relationship around 2000 or 2001 (not sure). At first, it seemed icky because they're both children, but then I read some of the fanfic, set when they were teens and older. Then, it was like yeah, YEAH, nice pairing! The absolute contrast is awesome. One, a senshi of light and hope, the other, a senshi of ruin and death. Any rebirth that Saturn can bring the world is achieved through destruction, while Minimoon achieves it through healing. Putting the two together creates a wonderfully angsty paradox.
I also love the idea of (all adult) Chibi-usa/Hotaru/Elios, but I'm a big fiend for threesomes and bi relationships. :)
As you can see by my icon, I also love the het 'ships. Yuuichiro is so, so sweet in the original version. I want him to have Rei just because he loves her so much. ^_^
