Frances Bean Piggie 1998-2003
Aug. 6th, 2003 11:01 pmOne of my guinea pigs died today. He was old (for a piggie) and when I went to check on the piggies around 4:30, his eyes were all crusty. This usually means an upper respiratory infection, which is very hard for a piggie to pull through unless you find a really excellent vet. I have yet to find any good piggie vets in the area; I've had several gouge me out of nearly $100 (each!) to have my piggie die anyway, so I'm very cynical about them ever being able to help. I kept watch over him, but he was still interested in food and water, so that was a good sign, it seemed. By 7:30, though, he was dead. Went very fast. It was strange how he looked, though, because after death, they usually lie flat on their side. Frances was curled up like he was sleeping. He was definitely dead though, because he wouldn't have stayed motionless while I scooped him up with a dust pan and put him in a plastic bag. (I can't touch them after death; it's a mental block with me.) Maybe that means he went in his sleep, which does make me feel better. But he wasn't breathing either, so he was gone. I'm going to dispose of him later--he's in the freezer right now. I know that sounds icky, but he's wrapped up in two plastic bags, so he's not touching anything.
My memories of Frances Bean: First of all, the reason his name sounds so feminine is because he was supposed to be a girl when I bought him. But it turned out the salesgirl sexed him incorrectly. He got his cagemate, Chimmy, pregnant twice, so they had two litters in 1999. I just kept his name the same because it was kinda funny. Frances Bean comes from Kurt Cobain's daughter. After the second litter, they were separated so they wouldn't have anymore babies. Frances lived with various sons of his after that. He was black with a red ring around his neck. A very sweet piggie.
It hasn't totally hit me yet, but I know I'll feel sad for the next few days every time I go to check on the piggies, because I won't see his little black face looking up at me.
