More on my quest to use my DVD-Rom to its fullest extent:
The thing came with PowerDVD, which won't work for some reason. It seems to recognize that there's a DVD in the drive, but it won't play it. So I went looking for another program.
I had heard things about VLC Media Player in the past, so I downloaded it and tried it out. It works just fine! Well, DVD's play really choppy, actually, but I didn't want to watch the DVD's anyway. I just want to take screencaps off of them easily. My computer doesn't have a very powerful processor, which is why they don't play smoothly; YouTube plays like that too. I haven't tried any VCD's yet. Besides this drive, I do have a video card with which I can take screencaps, but if the DVD is macrovision encoded, the caps have yellow bars across them. The DVD-Rom will bypass that. There's also the fact that VLC has a feature where it will take the screencaps for you, where you tell it how often you want it to take caps and then let it go, and it saves all those caps into a folder of your choice as sequentially numbered files. Once it's done, you just delete the bad and unwanted ones. I can't wait to try that out. ^_^
I remember when I bought the drive back in 2005. Originally I got it for around $65, but I didn't think it was going to fit, so I returned it. Shortly after, I went back to see if they had any others that would work out, and the same drive was on sale for $30. ^___^ Score!
