TV shows, SPN, other stuff
Nov. 6th, 2009 03:03 amBefore I talk about tv, I'm going to complain about getting sick, sick, sick this morning. I was trying to sleep and BLEEEEEEEH! Since they took out my gall bladder, things have been better in some ways but my digestion isn't normal a lot of the time, which I figure is to be expected. I have to be careful about the foods I eat, but only some of the time. Sometimes, I can eat greasy food and I'm fine. Other times, I eat stuff with tomato sauce and sausage (both things that make their own grease) and get horribly sick. I had coughing and breathing issues with a congested upper chest, but I managed to fall asleep. Some time later, I wake up with a throat full of stomach acid. Acid reflux hooooo! It tasted horrible, it burned, so I went into the bathroom and spit and spit and couldn't make it stop. I would have been happy to throw up at that moment. Finally I thought ah, antacids! Something a person with gall bladder disease should have in their medicine cabinet at all times. I chewed a few and that took care of it pretty well. ^_^
Alright, brief TV talk before I launch into Supernatural. Of course, here there be spoilers.
The new "V":
I think it's okay so far, but I keep comparing it to the original mini-series from 1984, which I still think was superior in terms of storytelling. I liked Diana better than I'm liking Anna so far. And it seems like they revealed half the story in only the first episode. It leaves me wondering what they're going to fill the rest of the season, and future seasons, with if they're going to tell us almost everything in the first 45 minutes. If this was a mini-series, then okay, but it's supposed to be a multiple-seasons tv show, right? Not looking forward to the filler. There's currently nothing else to watch Tuesdays at that time.
Also, if they don't do some form of the storyline with Robin getting pregnant with an alien's baby, I'll be very disappointed, because that was one of my favorite things from the original. I think maybe I'm looking for this to be too much like the original and should just watch that, but... like I said, Tuesday, tv wasteland.
I remember when the original mini-series came on, it was the talk of my school. NO ONE missed V unless they wanted to be left out of every conversation for weeks. One part of the mini-series came on the night before school started, and I wanted my mom to put my hair up in curlers so it would look good, but I had to take my glasses off some of the time because the part that goes over your ears kept getting in the way of her brushing and applying curlers and all that. So this kept happening:
*Something exciting happens in the movie, which I could tell by what I could hear*
Me: "WHAT? WHAT? WHAT HAPENED?! Describe it to me! Stop so I can put on my glasses for a minute and see what's going on!"
It was annoying. :D
Mercy:
A part of me wants to like this show because Michelle Trachtenberg is in it and her character is just so cute, but I'm having a hard time getting hooked on it. I think that's because there are a couple characters in the show who are a bit unlikeable; it's hard to care about your leads when you don't like 'em much. Then they recently killed off a character that I was kind of interested in and curious to learn more about before we ever got a chance to learn much of anything about her. I guess they were going for us learning more about the depth of her husband in the aftermath of her death, but I was just as interested in her. So I was disappointed in that. Meh, I'll stay with it unless something else better comes along at the same time.
Flash Forward:
Wow. This show just keeps pumping out great, interesting episodes with wonderful ideas that make a ton of sense in the wake of something like that happening. I was quite shocked by the one character committing suicide tonight; didn't see that coming. But I do like how it shows that the future can be changed so other characters have hope.
I loved the whole exchange last week when the little boy was going to go trick or treating but instead, he found his way to... crap, I haven't really taken the time to learn anyone's names, which makes recalling this story very hard. O_o Basically, the doctor and the one guy are supposed to get together, so the guy's son saw himself in the doctor's house in his flash forward, interacting with his future step-sister. So the kid goes to that house, thinking it is his house too. Which causes problems between the doctor's current husband and her supposed-to-be future man. OOH, that was JUICY.
The only name from the show that I remember is Demetri, and that's because it seems like such an odd name for an Asian guy. I just strongly associate that name with Russians, so my mind latched onto it as unusual. Everyone else, I couldn't tell you their names to save my life. They need to have all the characters parade by with large name tags or something.
Bad thing, though. NUBY. Argh! Why did they have to cast her fish-faced bad acting self in another show I like? I thought maybe she was just bad at being Ruby, but she's not so great at being Tracy either. Ugh. Oh well.
Supernatural 5.08 "Changing Channels":
- I noticed something recently in a picture of Castiel and just thought it was a funny thing, heehee, they caught his tie all messed up, but with the spoilers pics from 5.10 and now this episode, I've realized that they're doing it on purpose. Since the start of season 5, Castiel's tie is ALWAYS turned around backwards. Check! When I can make some time to, I'll post a few pics to show what I'm talking about. Now, it might not be since 5.01; I've only noticed it in the last few episodes. But they are definitely doing some sort of symbolic thing with Cas's tie. I bet it's supposed to symbolize his rebellion, that he's a changed angel. Nice little trick there.
- Now Sam is calling him "Cas" too. Shows how comfortable he's become, having Castiel around too.
- THE OPENING CREDITS AHHHHHH I laughed SO HARD. XD One of the funniest things I've ever seen on tv in my life. SPN sit-com style! Dean and Sam on a tandem bike! XD Castiel riding around on a tiny bike for some unexplained reason! (Which I wonder, was that just off-camera footage of Misha goofing around? I couldn't even tell it was him because he was out of uniform.) The "Bosom Buddies"-esque scenes! And Dean's catch phrase being, "Son of a bitch." It was all so great. XD
- I loved that absolutely mesmerized look Dean had on his face while watching the hospital show. "It's a guilty pleasure." :D Was the doctor's name actually supposed to be "Dr. McSexy"? They paged him that way! O_o
- Not so crazy about the idea that The Trickster was never The Trickster, but was actually Gabriel the whole time. It seemed like that's what they were implying, anyway. It'd be like telling us Castiel was never Castiel, but actually some other angel, after we'd gotten a chance to know him. It really doesn't make any sense for an archangel to play tricks on people. You know what does make sense to be a creature that would play tricks on people? A TRICKSTER. 9_9 I call bad plot twist.
- Is there a single angel in the garrison that doesn't think God has checked out and just wants the Apocalypse to happen? First Zachariah, then Raphael, now Gabriel. It's gotten repetitive and boring. I'm glad that they aren't focusing every episode on the Apocalypse because I'd be rolling my eyes and getting more bored by the second. It's good that they have other things to do. I mean, we've set up the Apocalypse already. Michael vs. Lucifer, Dean vs. Sam. There isn't much else to do with that idea until it's time for the big battle, and whether or not it happens or Sam and Dean find another way to do it. So anytime they deal with the subject before that final battle, they should have better things to do than introduce yet another angel who's depressed over the state of the world and thinks the best way to deal with it is to end humanity. Enough already. I want to see another angel (besides Anna) who actually has some faith and supports Castiel's actions, not because I love Cas, but because it'd be DIFFERENT. You can't tell me Cas is the only one who feels that way.
- Did Gabriel possess the Trickster or did the Trickster never exist to begin with? O_o The whole thing didn't really fit what I would think Gabriel would be like, either. Isn't he supposed to be an angel of healing? I don't know. I liked the episode up until that part, really.
- Loved the "Knight Rider" parody, with Sam being the talking car. XD I had no idea that was going to happen. Seems like it would have made more sense for Dean to be the talking car, but anyway...
- Loved how concerned Dean was for Castiel. ^_^ Cas's nose gets the exact same nick in it that it did in a past episode. Is it just really easy for the makeup people to make that injury, or what?
- I only watched a few episodes of "Grey's Anatomy" from season 1 and a few from season 2, before it became all about relationships, so I only got half those jokes. Made me really glad for the stuff I could get, like the sit-com jokes and "Knight Rider." Well, I never watched any "Knight Rider" either, but what person my age wouldn't recognize all the stuff with the car?
- "Would your mother and father still be alive if your brother had never been born?" OUCH. That's quite a lot of responsibility to put on poor Sam's shoulders.
Even though I wasn't crazy about the ending, it was still a very funny epsiode. I think that's all I had to say. If I think of anything else, I'll add it.
Now, a little talk about 5.09 and speculation on Supernatural 5.10. SPOILERS!
5.09... I don't get why some people get so riled up about the fan parodies. I am unafraid to admit that there is some Becky in me. (Becky being the nutso fan from 5.01.) The book publisher, she said things that all of us have said about the show. Every one of their parodies so far have been, well, pretty honest overall. At least, that's how most of us act on LJ. Maybe we wouldn't all be LARPing Sam and Dean at conventions, but I for one haven't been offended by any of it. I'm sure some of us aren't quite that hyper, but I'm a pretty hyper person overall once you get to know me, so it's impossible for me to be offended by Becky or the book publisher. I'm really interested to see how Sam and Dean take it, what with people acting out their lives as make-believe. That's gotta be weird.
I mean, sure, I don't want ALL the fans to be presented as nuts. But I'm not *worried* about next week's episode at all. *Shrug*
5.10... I've seen more spoiler pics from this episode. Meg is going to be in it! That hadn't been announced until now. When I first watched 5.01, I didn't think the replacement for the old Meg was given enough to do for me to really get a sense of her acting. However, the second time I watched 5.01, I liked her performance a lot more than I did the first time. The new spoiler pics of her look better too. I think she's an adequate replacement for the original Meg at this point, definitely doing a better job than Genevieve did for Ruby by a LONG SHOT.
That being said, I am glad that she's going to be on because she can serve as one of the supporting characters who dies. Better she die than Ellen or Jo, both of whom I'd like to see continue on the show and grow as characters. Hopefully, I'll get my wish. Although, the actress who plays Ellen said on her blog that this episode is a "doozy" for Ellen, which doesn't bode well for me getting what I want.
Second point, there's a scene where Lucifer traps Castiel in one of those holy oil circles to interrogate him, and I have a bad feeling he's going to tell Cas that he's the one who resurrected him. Not sure why, it just seems like something that would be revealed at a moment like that. I really hope not because 1). it's too hopeless; this show has got to have some hope in it somewhere, for pete's sake, 2). it'd be totally anti-climactic after Raphael already brought up that possibility, and half the fanbase is hoping it's true, and 3). it still makes no sense for Lucifer to have done both actions (resurrect Cas and put Sam and Dean on the plane). I guess Lucifer could have done one and God the other, but I still hope my speculatory fears are incorrect. A plot twist like that, for me, would not be a twist at all. Like a Dean/Sam fight to the death, it'd be way too predictable. What I hope is that the writers come together and think of something completely unexpected, like the thing where Sam was drinking demon blood last season. I never saw that coming.
And, yeah, I guess God resurrecting Castiel would be predictable as well, but maybe not on this show! Everyone expects it to be all doom and gloom. The happy ending is the unexpected twist on SPN. :D
