Reaction to "Supernatural" 6.01.

Reaction to Supernatural 6.01 "Exile on Main Street." Spoilers, of course.

Overall, I really loved it. It wasn't perfect, but there were a lot of good things.

Random comments:

- The fact that a whole year went by between the end of last season and the beginning of this one, with all those people knowing that Sam was alive and not telling Dean, really hurts. It won't make me stop watching the show or anything, but it really does bother me. I know that they were trying to give Dean his happy life, but how could they not tell him that his brother was alive? It's so damn cruel.
- I really like all the new characters for their own various reasons. But in some ways, it feels like there were too many emotional hurtles to cover in this episode to be spending time introducing new characters. It's like, they were needed for sundry reasons, but Sam and Dean reuniting was just too damn important. I'm not even sure what I'm saying here, because I wanted Corin to appear in this ep. I guess I'm just really excited to see the new characters get developed and I'm afraid that they won't because Sam and Dean's reunion is too important (and simply because the writers have a tendency to barely develop characters before just killing them off).
- I don't like Lisa. Her personality is fine, but she's gotten less attractive to me for some reason and I don't really like looking at her. Yeah I know that's a superficial attitude, but I can't help it; everyone has their preferences. Plus, she keeps Dean from rejoining the hunt. And again, I understand why the writers are doing this - it's a way to create conflict and have the brothers come back together slowly over several episodes. BUT, wasn't season 5 supposed to be about Sam and Dean coming back together? And here they are, estranged again. I'm just not enjoying that part of the story right now. I miss the times when there was little estrangement between them.
Honestly, I think Lisa is being a bit, well, REALLY selfish by keeping someone as surrounded by danger as Dean in her home when she's got Ben's life to think about. Yeah, it's nice for Ben to have a dad, but at the possible cost of his life? It's kinda crazy. It's not like Dean is his natural father. I think Ben is going to have to be put in real danger before she kicks Dean out.
- I can overlook the inconsistencies with the djinn overall, but I still feel like bitching about it, hee. In djinn lore, there are different species of djinn. But the djinn in this episode clearly said they were the children of the one the boys killed in the second season. They had never seen a djinn before that and they haven't seen one since, as far as we know. So why did they have completely different effects on people when they touched them? Shouldn't they be the same species as their father? I guess you could make sense of it somehow. It just bugged me a little how the first djinn made Dean see his fantasy, and these djinn made him see his worst fear. They didn't seem to be killed the same way either, although I could have missed something.
AND, the basic idea of djinn coming back to avenge the death of their father has already been done on SPN - it was called "Jump the Shark." (Only that time, it was ghouls.)
Oh wait! Something just occured to me. Maybe SPN's djinn have always had the power to make you see either type of illusion, and they choose the type based on what they want to do to you. That makes sense.
- I'm glad that Yellow Eyes didn't actually come back. It doesn't seem like a good idea to just rehash old enemies when they could create exciting new ones.
- Even though they didn't seem to get much development in this first ep (which I understand, but anyway...), I liked what they did reveal about Christian, Mark, and Gwen. Corin looked older than he really is, and I'm not sure if it was the slicked back hairstyle or just the lighting or what, but whatever. I still wuv 'im. :D He still gives me the vapors! *fans self* Oh, hot flash. XD Why did I like it so much when he walked from the room, slipping a gun into the back of his waistband? Because badass Corin is badass, that's why! I like the interaction he had with Dean; more of that, please.
Gwen was sassy; I like sassy women. "You've got very delicate features for a hunter." :D THANK YOU, WRITERS. I don't know how people keep from saying something everytime Jensen walks in a room, he's just that inhumanly gorgeous.
I even liked Mark. My favorite part was when Dean said that he didn't talk much, and he replied, "Enough." That's exactly how I am until I get to know you. Just sit back and observe and don't say a fucking word. (Once I get to know you, you can't shut me the fuck up, lol.) Every place I've ever worked, people always remark on how quiet I am, and there's always someone who laughs at that who has seen my other side. ^_^ INFJ's unite!
Please have more Campbells in future episodes (I don't mean more freakin' relatives, but more of these three). I wonder how they're all related. We know they are third cousins/whatever Mark was to Sam and Dean, but what about each other? Are Christian and Gwen related? They could go more into that. (They probably will.)
- I like that they are trying to up the ante by remarking that things are going crazy, how supernatural creatures are behaving strangely, and the hunters are seeing things they can't even identify. That's interesting! It makes sense to me, with all the huge changes there have been in Heaven and all. Things are getting chaotic.
- The star ceiling was neat.
- Golf? Dean is playing GOLF?? Dean is wearing those athletic sweatpants to bed?? I liked that he put away all his hunter things and his hunter clothes to signify that he's not hunting anymore. I also miss all those things and want them to come back very soon. It was just SO ODD to see the changes in Dean. Even if the golf clubs did come in handy. He basically became JENSEN.
- The idea that the Campbells are capturing supernatural creatures should be more interesting to me, but it makes too much sense for me to feel any foreboding about it, really. I just think of it as they're studying them to learn how to kill them, to find out useful things they can use in their hunts (like Samuel's antidote), that sort of thing. If there's more to it, I'm sure we'll find out eventually.
- I don't like the idea that Sam had some sort of awful time in Hell as well. For me, it lessens what Dean had to go through in Hell, for reasons I can't really explain. Just don't like it.
- I know it will probably never happen, but seriously, the writers need to have Sam and Dean sit down and just have a complete sobbing, snotty, wailing breakdown together. The things those boys have been through! How do they just hug and get teary-eyed when they are reunited with the person they love the most who was either dead or gone for an extended period of time? LET'S GET SERIOUS.
- All the new ideas they presented in this ep has gotten me all excited and squealy and wanting to write 37843843838 fanfics. Would it break my brain if I tried to think of them all at the same time? Let's try. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG I like pudding.
- Yes, I would like some Christian fanfic, please. My brain is very impatient to find out more.

I THINK that's all I had to say. If I think of anything else, I'll add it. It's a shame that I can't go back and rewatch the episode, but all of my recording devices are currently no longer operational in that way (play only, no record). I'll buy a new one eventually.

After all that, I still have something else I want to talk about right now. A movie! I watched "The Fourth Kind" tonight. Le spoilers ahead!

Background for those not familiar with the story: The movie was based on real events concerning aliens abductions in Nome, Alaska, and how everything came to a head in early October of 2000. Some of the footage in the movie was real recorded footage of various hypnosis sessions that were done to get people to remember their abduction experiences. (I'm slightly confused, though - did the real story happen in 2000? Because I don't see how that little boy could have gone from a kid to 22 in the last ten years. Wait, was he supposed to be around 12? That could explain it.)

Overall, most of the scenes that weren't real footage were okay, but kind of boring. What really blew my mind from here to Sunday was the real footage of those hypnosis sessions. All I've got to say is WHAT THE FUCKING HELL WAS THAT???? That is some of the scariest shit I've ever seen in my life!!!! I don't think I'll be able to sleep well for days until I get that shit out of my mind. XD The fact that it was real just... WHAT? For a few minutes, I thought there was no way they could have caught something like that on tape and the news not be jumping all over it and freaking out, but... that was the real footage, wasn't it? Why have I not heard about this until this movie? That was some FREAKY ASS SCARY footage.

Okay, if you haven't seen the movie, people like start floating off the furniture and some sort of entity possesses them, and their mouths open impossibly big, and then the inhuman alien voice speaks through them while their heads twist all around in impossible directions. A lot of the footage is distorted by interference, but you see enough. I can't imagine actually being there and seeing a thing like that in person. I'd probably never sleep again. They'd have to like conk me over the head with a mallet to get me to stop screaming my way through witnessing something like that.

What was really intriguing were those theories about ancient alien astronauts and how they were in contact with the Sumerians, and that's why the alien entity spoke Sumerian part of the time. "These things we're studying speak Sumerian, so that's what we'll speak... hold up, now you've got 50 different languages? Fuck." But seriously, what the fuck were they in contact with? Because I've never seen any alien abduction stories that have ended up like that. That was a whole new breed of alien. It would be interesting to be able to talk to whatever the hell that thing was and ask it questions, but not if someone has to wind up fucked up and crippled every time in order to do it! Holy crap. Whatever it was, it was as alien to us as you can get.

Can you imagine that medical insurance claim? "Yeah, aliens broke my neck while using me as a transistor radio. Woops."

I don't necessarily believe one way or the other in aliens and alien abductions, I just like to keep my mind open. It's interesting to read all the evidence and think about what could be going on. With all the planets there are out there, I would be surprised to find that there aren't aliens on at least one of them. I also find John Keel's theories about aliens being fourth dimensional beings to be interesting as well. The aliens in this movie seem more like something out of the twilight zone than outer space.

The question I'd really like to see answered is if we are being visited by aliens, and they are abducting people, do they have any concept of how much they are hurting and terrifying people, or do they just not care? I mean, are they so different from us that they can't understand what they're doing to the people they abduct? Or are they just assholes? XD

Questions? Comments? Papers to have me committed to the insane asylum?

Edit: AHHHHHHHHAHAHAHA THEY GOT ME! I did a little research and the entire movie is FAKE. All of that footage is fictional movie magic. They really had me going there for a little while. Some of the footage seemed too coincidental and dramatic to have been real, but they still made it seem real enough to basically get me. That's so damn funny, I love it! I suspected something was up; apparently, not enough, though. XD Hollywood, please make more movies like this. I love being fooled into believing something is real and being spooked all to hell for a little while.

Even if the "archival footage" isn't real, it was still scary as hell.
