Writer's Block: Smell You Later

I'll put the answer under a cut since it concerns the death of an animal. Talk of death and dead animals in the comments too. You have been warned! The worst smell I've ever had the displeasure of smelling was a dead cat lying by the side of the road. It was a stray hit by a car that laid there next to the curb for about two weeks, and I had to pass by it on my way to the bus stop. I guess I could have just crossed the street and avoided smelling it, but I was usually in too much of a hurry. Anyway, somebody finally disposed of it, but those two weeks definitely represented the worst smell ever. I now understand what people mean when they say the smell of decay is sickly sweet, because it is. There is a sweet, rotting fruit smell behind the awful, awful smell of what can only be described as death. I've never smelled anything like it, or anything that horrible again.
This is why I can't understand the people on the hoarding shows who hoard so much that they lose pets under the piles of crap and the pets die, and these people have no idea where their dead pets are. How can you possibly not find them by that horrible smell? It's overpowering!
It's also why I believe that Casey Anthony did hide her child's body in the trunk of her car for some amount of time. The guy who owned the impound lot where her car sat for a while said the trunk smelled like it had had a dead body in it. He was familiar with that smell because he'd found dead bodies in towed cars before. He also said there is nothing like that smell; you can't mistake it for anything else. So the idea that the trunk smelled that way because Casey had put trash in it is ridiculous to me. I've never smelled trash that was as bad as that decaying cat.
