Supernatural speculation

sailorhathorI've been wanting to put up some speculation on what's to come on "Supernatural" based on spoilers I've read, I just keep running out of time.
Spoilers for the last few eps of season 8:
In an upcoming episode called "Clip Show," several actors who appeared in previous episodes of SPN will be making an appearance, including the actress who played Sarah Blake in season 1. She'll be playing Sarah Blake again! There's also another spoiler that Crowley will work to "undo all the good Sam and Dean have done" in retaliation for them trying to close the gates of Hell. This clearly says to me that Crowley will be killing people Sam and Dean have saved in the past. :( I don't necessarily want this to happen because, besides the fact that it's sad, I'd rather one-time characters not return only so they can be killed. But, it totally sounds like something the writers would do.
I do have some questions, though. What does it mean to close the gates of Hell? It seemed like it would just keep demons from coming up to the surface to possess and hurt people, but then Crowley made it sound like all demons would be destroyed in the process (in the episode where Meg died). Then they seemed to drop that idea, as no one has mentioned it since that episode. There's also the door to Hell that was opened in season 2. At that point, they made it sound like it was hard for demons to get out of Hell and could only exit when a door like this was opened, however temporarily, and that it happened almost never. So what exactly are Sam and Dean closing? (Truthfully, I think the writers are just throwing continuity out the window and don't give a shit what they implied about ways in and out of Hell in season 2. They've proven to me that they just handwave continuity these days by not only completely forgetting that they've jumped their timeline ahead 2 years, but by also implying in the last ep that the "Supernatural" books continued to be written past the end of season 3, when they simply weren't. Do we have completely different writers now than we did in the first few seasons? Because I was under the impression that some of these people have been there for a long time and written many, many episodes of SPN. They do know that their show is out on DVD, right? Ripe for rewatching? I mean, shit, I don't do this for a living, but even I reread stuff I've written in the past in an effort to make sure I don't contradict it.) Another question: When the gates are closed, does that mean no souls can get into Hell either? If that's true, where will evil souls go? It seems like there are many things the writers haven't considered that I, personally, wish they would. Souls still seemed to be able to get into Hell even when it seemed to be much harder to get in/out of it, so that probably won't be a concern, but I still want them to address it on the show, especially when it would probably take only a few lines.
In other news, I have a soft spot for the movie Godzilla vs King Kong, which I'm transferring from VHS to DVD right now. I first saw it on television when I was a kid. That song the natives sing to King Kong stuck with me for years until I forgot where I heard it and it drove me crazy trying to figure out where it came from. At the time, my siblings and I were big fans of a local wrestling show that came on Saturday nights. "World Class Championship Wrestling"! :D Everybody in Dallas watched this show. Of course, we loved the drama of the Von Erichs and their various "enemies." (I still have about half of the "Hair Match" on tape.) Anyway, while Godzilla and King Kong were fighting, my brother did wrestling commentary as if one of them was Kerry Von Erich and the other was someone among their many enemies (either one of the Freebirds or Bruiser Brody or someone like that). I remember my sister and I laughing so hard at the whole thing. Every time I see the movie, I remember that. :)
