Season finale of "The Following"
May. 1st, 2013 04:20 amMy reaction to the season finale of "The Following," which will be under a cut for spoileroonies...
The season started out pretty strong, but the writing went down in quality as things progressed until the show was so ridiculous that it was more amusing than thrilling. I think my Bullshit Meter first went off when Joe escaped in the helicopter out of nowhere. This cult had way too many convenient connections that had me saying, "Oh, COME ON..." much more than anyone should ever say in reaction to a TV show.
The only reason that I kept watching it was because of my fondness for my little bugaboo, the cuddliest FBI agent ever, Mike. ^_^ He will be the only reason that I will watch the first episode of season 2 just to see what direction the story goes in after the "death" of Joe Carroll.
First off, I was actually quite surprised that Debra died. Although, it's not much of a surprise since Ryan and Mike tried 10 seconds of CPR before giving up. "Oh well, she's dead. Hey look, there's a manuscript in the coffin!" O_o I actually LOLed through most of that scene because it was so WTF. Who tries such a short session of CPR before giving up??!! Mike shed his manly FBI agent tear for Debra before leaving her dead on the ground to wait for the paramedics to come try to save her. So ridiculous. I was taught CPR in sixth grade during a life-saving unit we did. Fucking sixth grade! And two grown men couldn't do it for more than a few seconds? Did Ryan's wittle hands get tired? Okay, whatever, let's move on.
Oh wait, I wasn't done. As for the writers, why create such an interesting backstory for the character, only to do nothing with her for the second half of the season, then kill her off? I mean, I only cared for Debra a smidge because of how little they did with her, but it still made me mad that she died. When Sniper Guy started gloating about her death, I didn't want Ryan to shoot him - I wanted Ryan to beat him to death with his shovel. CLANG, CLANG, CLANG! I guess that would have been harder to explain to the FBI. "Well, you see, he went for my gun, so I hit him with the shovel. Several times."
I also laughed a lot at Joe's death. The fact that they're doing this soap opera bullcrap is very funny. Whenever the villain fakes his own death, the method that is used more than any other is death by explosion. Oh, but he got out just in time! Joe's not dead. He'll pop up sometime in season two, mark my words. It reminds me of a much superior episode of "Medium" where a woman bought an insurance policy on her own life where her lover would wind up being the receiver of all the money. The man was a dentist. He drugged a hooker and did work on her teeth until her dental records would match the woman's, then they put the unconscious hooker in her house and set it on fire. Everyone thought the woman had died and her lover collected the insurance money. Then the man and woman ran off to Spain together. Joe's story will be similar, except not quite as good. Somehow, he planned all of this in advance. Just in case things went wrong, he had a body with identical/similar dental records in the boat house. How he faked the DNA will be revealed in some way as well. Sound ridiculous? Yes, but this show has been doing impossibly convenient cult shenanigans since about the middle of the season, so it wouldn't surprise me at all. I suspect I will have much reason to yell, "HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCKADOODY CAAAAAR!!" once Joe shows up again. (If I watch season two that long.)
I was not at all surprised that Molly showed up at the end. It was clear Joe had no intention of letting her be the one to kill Ryan, he just told her she could to keep her loyalty. But since Joe had to fake his own death, Molly saw her chance. As usual, the FBI is stupid and doesn't have an armed guard right outside Ryan's door or even inside his apartment; you would think it would be a good idea since Emma and other cult members were still out there. Once they heard about Joe's "death," they'd be gunning for Ryan in a second. But I guess Ryan and Claire wanted to have The Sex, so they couldn't post a guard inside the apartment. Molly and her "I want to be the one to kill Ryan" was too much of a loose end not to bring it up before the episode ended. Of course, Ryan will survive. He's the main character. Claire, I think it could go either way. Technically, she should be dead. Molly stabbed her right in the small of the back with a pretty long knife. Being stabbed in that area can cause death or at least some level of paralysis. But because this is TV, who knows what her actual injuries will be. If she does die, I'll feel sorry for Joey, but I don't care a whole hell of a lot for Claire.
I'll definitely watch the season premiere just to see how things come out for Ryan and Claire, and what storyline they're going to take up after that, but beyond 2.01? I just don't know.
Oh, and I wish Emma had been killed. :P But hey, she may be a cold-blooded killer, but at least she doesn't Dine and Dash. ;)
