Mar. 23rd, 2004 10:53 pmThings I miss:
Being able to eat ice cream whenever I felt like it. Now I have to plan my entire menu around one Klondike bar. I mean, I'm not a huge ice cream person anyway, but I've got half a box of these things left and I just hate to waste them. Maybe if I only eat half of one at a time...
My SuperNintendo. This week I've been jonesing to play Super Mario Cart and Kirby Superstar, but the thing's broken. Video games are a nice distraction, help me clear my head and junk. I just don't have enough games for the NES to keep me happy in this area.
Something I just realized tonight:
I am a Skeet Ulrich fangirl. @_@ You all probably knew that months ago, but I didn't use that word to describe myself until tonight. XD
And I just feel like
I'm about to start typing a Miracles fanfic story I wrote called "Psychomantium." The main focus of the story is Paul and Alva build a psychomantium chamber in the SQ office. I really love the idea of the chamber and SQ using it, so I had to write this story in order to get the chamber in the office in a regular, non-slash story. :D Of course there's lots of other stuff that comes out in the story, but that's the main thing. Anyway, it got me thinking about psychomantiums and the supernatural in general.
In case you don't know what a psychomantium is, it's a little room/closet that is used for contacting spirits. The Latin meaning is something to the effect of a room where one "interrogates the dead" which sounds really funny to me, because it conjures up images of Good Cop and Bad Cop interrogating a wailing ghost. XD Anyway, there are variations on exactly how the room should be set up, but the main thing is that the walls are painted black (or draped with a black curtain), there's a mirror, and one light (some sort of very dim, soft light). You sit in a chair and stare into the mirror, thinking about the person you want to contact, and they are supposed to appear in the mirror. Then you can chat with them. You're supposed to be able to contact all sorts of weird things through these chambers; the past, the future, aliens, demons, ghosts, people in other parts of the world in real time, other-dimensional beings, you name it!
Now, I don't know how much of this stuff I actually believe in, but I've always been an experimenter when it comes to the supernatural (as long as I have someone else to do it with). I am totally fascinated with this idea. However, here's where the weirdness comes in. As attracted as I am to supernatural/occult concepts, they also scare the shit out of me. That's why I never use my Ouija board alone, would never attempt many many things by myself... if I knew of a psychomantium, I would most likely step in, have a fascinated look around, then run like hell before I actually saw anything. I guess I'm afraid that some of these bizarre things actually exist, and that I can't handle dealing with them. I've had a few weird experiences over the years; some were really neat, while others scared me really bad. And it's true that I am extremely attracted to anything that can scare me out of my wits (that's why I love "Ringu" and "The Ring"). I like to conquer that fear and then roll in the darkness of it all.
I just think it's really kind of funny how I can be so strongly attracted to concepts like psychomantiums and yet so terrified of them. It's much easier for me to explore this interest when I have someone who will explore with me - that's why Nancy and I used to have so much fun playing with the Ouija board. Those were some of my coolest experiences with the supernatural. Once you cross the line into dealing with it head-on, it's not so scary. But before that, it can be quite terrifying, the unknown. I know a lot more about what I'm doing now than I did many years ago, so that helps. Things are less scary when you take complete control. Let the "spirits" know who's boss.
So, who's going in the psychomantium with me the first time? ^_^ Hehheh, would help if I had one, huh? Could you see going to Home Depot for that? "I need 8 planks of wood, black paint, 8 mirrors..." "What are you making?" "Chamber for contacting the dead." XD
