::tap dances across the computer screen::
May. 19th, 2004 02:06 amMan, the net has been dead for the last two days. I've gotten so little email and junk. I hope stupid aol's stupid anti-spam controls which I cannot control because I'm still on stupid 5.0 haven't been keeping out all my stupid mail. :P
As for "24"... ::breaks into song:: o/` Ding dong the bitch is dead, which old bitch? The wicked bitch! Ding dong the wicked bitch is deeeeeead! o/` I'm very happy with who died tonight. Didn't care much one way or the other for one, and wanted the other to die. Are the writers finally reading my mind?
I'll cut the rest of this because it's just more general babbling about this and that.
I was in the mood to join some communities on lj that deal with urban legends because it's a subject I get great amusement out of. I found this one community that's about spooky stories and urban legends, but I'm not sure I want to join. I have little patience for teenagers who make up outlandish, untrue stories to get attention - they form one of my big pet peeves about the net. Kids think because the net is "anonymous" that they can use it to get cheap attention, and I've seen some really nice, well-meaning people get pulled in. They get so worried about these stupid kids when it's obvious to myself and some others that they're just making the shit up. For the people who posted with me on the SM II board on aol, remember Tuxe? Uh huh, he was one of those kids. I couldn't STAND that little jerk.
Anyway, I'd like to join this community, but it seems to have a few kids desperate for attention in it. I read a story or two on there, and they sounded really made up. Like, if this kind of spooky stuff was really happening to someone, I just can't see them talking about it the way they're talking about it there. Either that, or they overdramatize their reaction to the events, when it's obvious it's not affecting them as badly as they make it out. It makes me very reluctant to join the community, because I'd be so tempted to say, "Honey, you're making this up as you go along, aren't ya?" I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut.
I mean, I do believe in stuff like ghosts and hauntings, but I also think it's good to keep a healthy amount of skepticism handy. It amazed me how easily some of the members of the community accepted these stories which sounded so made up. It reminded me of some members of a Yahoo Group who got on the subject of a ghost hunting site and how they had all these pictures of "ghost orbs." I looked at the pictures - they were clearly just the flash reflected off pipes in the photos! People want the paranormal to be accepted seriously, but stuff like that just hurts the effort. It makes people who believe in some of this stuff look kinda stupid.
I mean, I know I'm not perfect, and I sometimes believe in things that some people may think is stupid rubbish. But when people approach this subject with absolutely no skepticism whatsoever, it's just really damaging and frustrating.
So anyway, I'd really like to find a nice community that has at least some intelligent people in it and not just a bunch of bored teenagers who will either be clawing for attention, or swearing that every urban legend is true. I've had a few weird experiences in my time, most that are common and easily explainable, but also a couple that are really bizarre. I'd love to find out if anyone else has experienced some of these things, and/or what people think may have happened. My mind is open to various possibilities.
I may join and just post and see what happens; sometimes you can't weed out the relatively normal people from the ones who have a screw loose until you start talking with them. Just ask anyone who's met me. BAhaha had to say it before anyone else did. ~_^
